| The use of Manuka Honey as a wound dressing is an ancient remedy that has been rediscovered and becoming of increasing interest as more reports of its effectiveness are published. The clinical observations recorded are that infection is rapidly cleared, inflammation, swelling and pain are quickly reduced, odor is reduced, sloughing of necrotic tissue is induced, granulation and epithelialisation are hastened, and healing occurs rapidly without scarring. The antimicrobial properties of Manuka Honey prevent microbial growth in the moist healing environment that’s created. Unlike many other topical antiseptics, Honeymark's First Aid Antiseptic Lotion causes no tissue damage. As its main ingredient, Manuka Honey actually promotes the healing process. It has a direct nutrient effect as well as drawing lymph out to the cells by osmosis. The stimulation of healing is due to the acidity of the honey.

In September, 2007, I contracted a MRSA infection on the base of my finger, left hand. The infection started as a small pimple and within 36 hours, my hand within 3" from the wound site was swollen, painful and had limited motion. A friend suggested that it was most likely a spider bite and strongly urged me to seek immediate medical care.
I went to the emergency room of our local hospital as was actually seen very quickly after triage. The doctor made a 3/8" incision at the wound site, debrided the area by removing the puss as much as possible, inserted a sterile strip of mesh for the puss to cling to, and dressed the wound without stitching the incision back up.
